View of Patagonia's Futaleufu Valley: Home of some of the worlds best adventure travel vacations

PATAGONIA'S RIO FUTALEUFU
Home of amazing Patagonia Adventure Travel Vacations

The Rio Futaleufu begins in the Argentina Andes as the Rio Tigre. After flowing through several lakes in the Parque National Los Alerces, it emerges as the Rio Futaleufu, which means Rio Grande in Spanish. With a volume of between 6000cfs and 25,000cfs, this large river passes through the glacial- carved granite valleys and canyons of Chile's Patagonia, where the snow-capped mountains are covered with a temperate hardwood forest. Near Argentina lies the small town of Futaleufu, with 1000 inhabitants.

From the lake in Argentina to near the small town of Futaleufu (population 1000), the river runs quietly, meandering across the broad valley, until it explodes in the rapids of the Canyon Del Infierno, and continues for 40 kilometers tumbling over big-water rapids until it reaches Lago Yelcho. Below this, the flat water Rio Yelcho lazily flows to the ocean, cutting through a semi-wilderness canyon before reaching the ocean near the town of Chaiten.

The Rio Futaleufu is famous for its super clear blue-green water, clean well-defined rapids with huge waves, and superb rafting and kayaking. Many world adventure travelers tell us it is the best whitewater in the world, with the backdrop of patagonia's incredible mountains and forest.
